Holiday shopping becoming discount-driven

Analysts say this year is shaping up to be the most discount-driven holiday shopping seasons since the country was in a deep recession.

It's also one of the most disappointing for stores.

The number of shoppers entering stores is down 16.5 percent from last year, though sales are slightly up. Analysts are forecasting they'll rise 2.4 percent to $265 billion by the time the season ends.

The modest growth comes as the amount of discounting at stores is up 13 percent from last year. That's the highest level since 2008.

Meanwhile, stores are rolling out more discounts to try to attract last-minute shoppers.
