HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Fire crews were out battling a huge apartment fire overnight on Hilton Head Island.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Windmere Village, 50 Yacht Cove, destroying nine units and displacing nine families. Officials have been out at the scene all night trying to figure out a cause.

First responders have contained the fire and now its a matter of watching hot spots.

A witness reported seeing flames shooting about 20 feet into the air at one point. Officials say there is major structural damage, mainly to the back of the units.

Red Cross volunteers are assessing the needs of everyone affected with lodging, food, clothing and emotional support.

So far, the Red Cross has provided five of the nine families with lodging at a nearby hotel. The other four familes affected chose to stay with friends and family.

No injuries were reported and all residents and pets made it out safely.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
