Eagle fans wait as Army talks coaching job with Monken

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Fans like Ron Rushing hope Georgia Southern keeps its coach, but figure they can't keep him forever.

"We all knew his success would get him more offers, ones that were sweeter, and one day he'll take one of them," he said.

Georgia Southern athletics confirmed Wednesday night that they'd given Army permission to talk to Jeff Monken about their head coaching position.

West Point fired their coach this week after another disappointing season and their 12th consecutive loss to Navy. Monken is a former assistant coach at Navy.

He's also among only a handful of coaches versed in the triple option offense that Navy has used with success, especially over Army.

Rushing considers the potential job offers a side effect of Monken's success at Southern. He's amassed a 38-16 record in four seasons since bringing the triple option back to the Eagles.
