Friday morning rain soaks the Valley - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort, SC, News, Weather & Sports

Friday morning rain soaks the Valley

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Moderate rain swept across much of the Valley this morning, with areas of heavy snow in the mountains as a strong December storm moved through Arizona on Friday.

The East Valley received the brunt of the early morning moisture as Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert and Scottsdale had a half an inch of rain.

The low pressure system that brought the rain, snow and chill will move out of the region this evening.

Here are some rain totals over the last 24 hours as of 6 p. m. Friday:

  • Phoenix - 0.39 inches
  • Paradise Valley - 0.59 inches
  • Glendale - 0.16 inches
  • Surprise - 0.43 inches
  • Apache Junction - 0.51 inches
  • Tempe - 0.59 inches
  • Mesa - 1.02 inches
  • Wickenburg - 0.55 inches
  • Cave Creek - 0.43 inches

Snow was falling in the high county Friday morning but tapering off to scattered snow showers Friday evening. The snow level was around 6,000 feet Friday.

The Flagstaff airport had nearly 8 inches of snow by 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The snow closed schools for the day.

Not as much snow is expected in Heber-Overgaard.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reported snow on Interstates 17 and 40 near Flagstaff and on State Route 87 north of Payson.

This system is bringing in much cooler air with temperatures staying in the 50s today. The average high in Phoenix for Dec. 20 is 65 degrees.

The storm is moving out tonight, leaving the Valley with clouds overnight and dry conditions. Overnight lows will be in the mid-40s with patchy fog possible through Saturday morning.

It will still be cool over the weekend, with highs only in the low 60s. Totally sunny skies will reappear by Sunday.

A warming trend is on the way with plenty of sunshine for the holiday week. By Christmas Day, temperatures will be above average in the upper 60s.
