Residents remain out of fire damaged HHI building

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The Hilton Head fire marshal has turned over an investigation into a fire that displaced almost 20 families at the Wyndemere Village apartments to the condo association.

They have said fire does not appear to be suspicious and believe it started in the bottom middle section in the back of the apartments.

The fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at building 300 located on yacht cove drive.

No one was injured but the entire building was evacuated out of safety.

Firefighters won't know for sure what caused it until structural engineers take a close look and rule out more possibilities.

"Based upon the patterns of where the fire traveled, we can take it back to that area and on the deck, on the lowest deck, the fire looks like it goes back to that area and then spread out and up,"  Hilton Head Fire Marshal Joheida Fister.

Vanessa Nguyen has a report coming up on THE News and an update on whether residents will be able to return to their homes.
