BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, about 150 elementary, middle and high school students showcased their best bowling skills at the Beaufort County School District's Special Olympics tournament.

This is the first year it's being considered a school sport in the county.

For three hours, students gave it their all, hitting strikes and spares, while enjoying pizza and time with friends at Bluffton's Station 300.

Volunteers assisting the students included members of the US Marines, the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club.

Best of all, the tournament is designed to let the special needs students win.

"The great part about everything is we have volunteers that are here to help out and be with them and hang out with them so that they can have a fun time too," said volunteer Edi Darnell.

"Best part is, I always hit strikes or spares because I already won," said special needs student Bailey Messmer.

The Special Olympics tournament is designed to teach students about compassion and raise awareness about the special needs population.
