ATLANTA (WTOC) -

With the holiday season upon us, residences and businesses light up with colors of the season.

Georgia Power would like to remind customers to keep safety top of the mind when powering decorations with electricity.

Here are some tips for a safe and vibrant Christmas season:

-Watch for lines and poles. Install decorations away from power poles or lines and away from the building's primary power drop.

-Don't overload wall outlets or extension cords.

-Take extra care outdoors and only use lights and extension cords rated for outdoor use.

-Check for damaged wires and discard any light sets with frayed or damaged areas.

-Use decorations that carry Underwriters Laboratories approval.

To save money and energy when powering your decorations, consider buying ENERGY STAR Certified LED lights and other new technologies.

Georgia Power is always working to help customers save money and use energy more efficiently. For more information about the company's energy efficiency programs, visit www.georgiapower.com.
