Monken leaving for Army still uncertain

Posted: Updated:
STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -
Jeff Monken may, that is, MAY, be headed to Army.

Various media outlets are reporting that it's a certainty that Monken will be the 37th head coach at Army, but many are using unnamed sources, as no one is willing to go on the record.

Georgia Southern has gone through this before.  In 1989, un-named sources had Erk Russell as the next head coach at The University of Georgia, replacing Vince Dooley.  Ray Goff became Dooley's successor.

WTOC has tried reaching those involved, including head coach Jeff Monken and Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein.  One current Georgia Southern player told us they haven't been told anything of Monken leaving.

Army football insider Sal Interdonato is reporting that Monken is Army's next coach, but United States Military Academy Athletic Director Boo Corrigan has no comment on the hiring at this time.

Sports Illustrated Senior Writer Pete Thamel says Army has not yet made a decision, and that they finish conducting interviews Monday.
