Traffic, weather not a big problem for holiday travelers

Posted: Updated:

More than 94 million people are traveling for the holidays, and while driving conditions are rough in other parts of the country, people passing through the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire say they're getting through pretty smoothly.

"We ran into a little bit of rain that slowed us down a little bit, but other than that it's been really easy going," said Carl Johnson.

This is Johnson's first road trip with his daughter, his soon to be son in-law and their dog, Gus.

Even though AAA said there's a lot more people on the road this year, Johnson hasn't noticed any extra traffic.

"It's busy, but the roads have been passable and people are traveling along," he said. "It's been fine."

It's fortunate for them, and others who are passing through the area, but it's a different story for other parts of the country. Drivers are dealing with ice, snow, torrential rain, and tornadoes which is creating a travel nightmare for many.

For the Johnsons, the only thing slowing them down on this 16 hour trip is Gus.

"He doesn't do well when I leave him home, but he also doesn't do well on long car rides, so we have to stop often to allow him to get out and stretch his legs," said Erika Johnson.

For those of you who will be driving in that bad weather, here are some tips from AAA:

-Increase your distance from the car in front of you.

-Avoid cruise control, especially in heavy snow areas.

-Stay in the most recently cleared lane, and keep your headlights on.

For the Johnson's they're just four hours from their destination, and Carl Johnson can’t wait to get there to see his son and grandchildren.

"I haven't seen three of my grandchildren in over a year, so I’m looking forward to it," he said.
