Vacant house burns on Tattnall riverbank

REIDSVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

A three story house built on the bank of the Ohoopee River burned to its foundation Monday night.

Reidsville fire chief Jimmy Kirkland said they received the call just after 9 p.m. but could not get trucks to the home immediately because the private road from U.S. Highway 280 was nearly impassable from washouts.

Once they could get trucks to it, the fire was too advanced. Harold Smith, who lives on the other side of the Ohoopee could not believe what he saw.

"It was completely engulfed from one end to the other. It wasn't like it started and burnt down. It just went. It only took an hour for it to be on the ground," Smith said Tuesday.

Kirkland said the house had changed owners several times in the past year or so and was vacant while it was being remodeled. The chief said the fire was under review by the fire marshal and the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office.
