Shoppers hit local small businesses for last minute Christmas gifts

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

Shoppers aren't just hitting the big box retailers for their last minute gifts. Small businesses in Beaufort have seen a constant stream of customers throughout the day.

With just a couple hours to go, many folks in Beaufort chose to shop locally for the convenience and variety of gifts.

Around early afternoon, the "Monkey's Uncle" caught its first break from the heavy foot traffic.

"This week has been great, today has been crazy, business has been really strong," said co-owner Joe O'Brien.

The store isn't offering any sales but that hasn't slowed them down.

O'Brien said he came downstairs at one point and was shocked by what he saw.

"I came down and there were people lined up to the back of the store," he said.

Rainbow Looms and Animal Poppers are the top two items selling in the store.

This is their first year in business and so far, the holiday season has exceeded all expectations.

"If you told me how well we would've done, I would've taken it. Absolutely, it's better than we planned," said O'Brien.

Down on the opposite end, Lulu Burgess owner Nan Sutton knows how to get into the Christmas spirit.

Dressed head to toe in a Santa outfit, she greeted customers and passed out candy to children.

"I have a very, very eclectic mix of everything! Jewelry, accessories, gift, men's, women's, you name it, I got it," said Sutton.

Sutton's store prides itself on catering to the truly gifted. Prices range from $5 up to $200.

"One of my bestsellers has been my wine glass that says 'For Medicinal Purposes Only' and then my other one is my wine glass that holds a whole bottle of wine," she said.

And unlike other businesses that closed early today, Sutton stayed open until 5 p.m. to help out as many customers as possible.

"I always wait for that last desperate husband who just, he forgot something," said Sutton.

And don't forget most of the stores on Bay Street will be holding after-Christmas day sales.
