Family receives Christmas surprise from Portman's Music

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

One family who lost almost everything in a tragic fire earlier this month got an early Christmas surprise that will surely brighten everyone's day.

Thirteen year old Stephanie Zerby lost her guitar in the Dec. 4 fire that destroyed her Crown Villas apartment building and everything inside it, including her flute, key board and guitar.

Her school and friends helped replace the flute and keyboard. "I didn't really think that many people cared, but they really do," said Zerby.

However, that still left Zerby without her guitar, but not for long.

Tuesday, Zerby thought she was dropping off her rented flute at Portman's Music. Little did she know she'd receive one of the best christmas presents ever.

"I thought that was all we were going to do and we were going to jump back in the car. But I guess I'm going back to the car with a new guitar," said Zerby.

Portman's Music learned about the devastating event from Zerby's school and decided to step in, giving the 8th grader a brand new electric guitar to replace the one that was destroyed.

"To know that they have lost their home and all of their possessions and we can help make the new year better for them, something to look up to, something to smile about. And we thought it would be very nice for us to be a part of it," said Jerry Portmans, co-owner of the store.

A gift that left Zerby speechless and starting the new year off on a happy note.

"It kind of gave me a new perspective on people. I didn't know people could be really that nice. It's really amazing," said Zerby.

Portman's also donated guitar lessons to Zerby and her grandfather since they've never had any formal training.
