Savannah's Union Mission provides 300 free Christmas dinners

Posted: Updated:

While most people spent Christmas day with family and friends, dozens of volunteers joined the staff of Savannah's Union Mission to share the Christmas spirit.

They served a full Christmas dinner to almost 300 homeless people.

The plates and decorations were set.

All that was missing were the honored guests.

Around noon, they made their way inside.

"It's so wonderful to come here on a daily basis and know that you're making a big impact on the clients that you see everyday," said Jeanette Ortiz-Andreou, Emergency Service Manager for the Union Mission.

The annual event is just one way the shelter fights to reduce the homeless population.

"They're a big blessing altogether, they do wonderful things in the community and they also give you know, people who don't have the opportunity or the means to have somewhere to stay a place to stay," said Union Mission resident Kevin Brocklebank.

Huey Floyd, who used to be homeless, is now a resident assistant at the Union Mission.

"They took me in, they've helped me file for my disability, they've helped me with some medical and some dental, also helped me with food and shelter, they've helped me with some counseling from the counseling center," he said.

More than 50 volunteers worked together to make the whole process go as smoothly as possible.

From preparing the food, serving it and cleaning up, they did it all with a smile on their face.

"We're celebrating Jesus' birthday so we're giving gifts and his gift to us is to serve and love our brothers and sisters," said volunteer Etta Jane Williams-Robbins.

They say it was a blessing to give back.

"I get to meet new people, and it just makes me happy to see other people happy," added her granddaughter, Tayana Brown.

And as for the food, it seems there were no complaints.

"It was amazing, they did a wonderful job seasoning it, it was just perfectly seasoned," said Brocklebank.

For many, this Christmas will be a special one thanks to the love and care they received from the Union Mission.

With support from Sodexo, Gulfstream Aerospace provided the 300 free Christmas dinners.
