Woman turns in parcel of pot meant for another address

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Sometimes the post office makes a mistake. In this case, that mistake led one woman to make an eye-popping discovery that landed a man in jail.

Getting someone else's mail is hardly unheard of. But this time -- it was a buzz kill.

To protect the fearful, the street in which the wrong package was mailed will not be identified. But a parcel mailed to 7684 was dropped off at 7864. It was a mistake that turned out to be dopey when the receiver discovered the shipment contained more than one pound of marijuana.

The woman who received the package turned the special delivery over to Bartlett Police Department.

Officers later found two strange men at her house, searching for the package after the mail carrier realized the error and told them where it had been delivered.

The homeowner declined an interview, but told Action News 5's Nick Kenney, "I just want to put it behind me, like it never happened."

The man at the address where the package was supposed to be delivered said he thought the box was supposed to contain name-brand clothing from Polo. He claims he let his friend have the package delivered to his address.

The friend, Cedrius Carter, now faces drug charges.

At Carter's listed address, his grandmother answered the door.

"He don't receive no mail over here at all," she said. "He's a good boy as far as I know of. I don't know nothing to tell you that's bad."

But police say he may have made off with all of that weed, if only the shipment plan had not gone to pot.

Carter's bond is $20,000. His only other records in the Shelby County Court system are some driving charges.
