Groups team to help Screven County families

SYLVANIA, GA (WTOC) -

A local ministry teamed with an international relief group to bring food to hundreds of Screven County families.

S.M.I.L.E. Ministries of Sylvania paired with Feed the Children to distribute food and household items to 800 families Friday.

S.M.I.L.E. screened local families to identify those in need and issued vouchers that were redeemed in two lines of drive through distribution.

Kevin Hagan, CEO of Feed the Children, said the organization feeds 350,000 school children in 17 countries on a daily basis. Likewise, they conduct 300-400 food drops annual like the one in Sylvania.

He said hunger in America is more of a problem than many realize.

"Poverty exists everywhere. It doesn't matter if you're in the outback of Australia, the most remote village of Africa or if you're right here in Southeast Georgia, poverty exists and everybody needs a helping hand, particularly since the economic downturn," Hagan said.

The Sylvania stop was unique for Hagan, a Screven County native who became Feed the Children's CEO 18 months ago. He recognized many familiar faces Friday; some were helping deliver the supplies and others were on the receiving end.

"They had such a part in who I am, so it's good to bring the work home with you and share a little bit of what we do around the world," he noted.
