Text scam hits people Christmas Day

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people across Georgia received a text on Christmas Day that says your account has been frozen and to call the number listed, but authorities are warning people not to open this text because it is a scam.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office had over 100 reports from people that received this text message Christmas Day on their cell phone telling them that their bank account has been compromised.

For those that did call the number, which in most cases started with a 706 area code, they were sent to an automated message asking them to enter their account information.

"It has reached people in Savannah, South East Georgia and a lot of people, it seems like that are with Verizon," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor. "Somebody out there obviously figured something out so they could contact all these Verizon phones via texts. I think most people know don't ever enter your personal information, over text email or over the phone. If you ever feel your account is compromised, contact your bank."

After receiving numerous complaints, the Federal Trade Commission disconnected the number and left an automated response stating they believe this was a scam and someone may have been phising for your personal information.

Some folks say they were warned about this text but had fears some would fall for the scam.

"Our biggest concern was his parents, who may not be as familiar with social media, so if they got a text message they may or may not have clicked on it depending what they were doing," said Misty Blackston. "We were grateful we could reach out to them and make sure they were aware."

The Sheriff's Office warns if you receive a message, do not call the number and provide your personal information. If you believe your account has been hacked or compromised, contact your bank directly.
