SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said a 21-year-old man was shot last night in the Edgemore Neighborhood. He died at Memorial Health, but police are not yet considering it a homicide. It is still a death investigation.

Up to now, there have been 31 homicides so far this year, and depending on how this investigation continues, that number could go up.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police has detained one man in connnection to the shooting, however, at this point he is not a suspect and is helping with the investigation.

The Edgemore shooting is not part of the 31 homicides that have happened so far this year. That number is significantly higher compared to the 23 homicdes in 2012 and the 26 the year before.

"In most of these cases, in probably all but 9 of them, the victim and the perpetrator are known or we believe are known to each other," said Maj. Larry Branson with SCMPD's criminal investigations.

Of the 31 homicides, Savannah-Chatham has cleared or will clear 22 of them, leaving only 9 open cases and giving the department an 87 percent clearance rate up to this point for the year.

With the new year right around the corner, there are already plans in place to better fight this type of crime.

"The key, I believe, moving forward is that our officers continue to be very visible in our communities. That we do continue to get to know our neighborhoods, that we do keep an open dialogue with those who are in the community and work together to make this a safer community," said Branson.

Anyone with any information on any open case is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.
