Incandescent light bulbs coming to a dark end

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The light bulb as we know it is coming to an end and many people will be left in the dark wondering what to do next.

"The 100 and 75s were phased out in 2012, 2013. The 40 and 60 watts are gone this year. In other words, they won't be manufactured anymore," said Fussell Hughes, Hughes Hardware.

In 2007, President Bush signed a mandated law to slowly stop the production of low-efficiency incandescent light bulbs. Fussell Hughes at Hughes Hardware is still selling these 40 to 100 watts incandescent light bulbs in his store until they are all gone. Eventually, he will make way for newer energy efficient bulbs.

"I think the customer don't realize what's going on. When they come in and want a 100 watt light bulb, you say can't get them anymore. Now you have to explain to them that you got to buy something else," said Hughes.

The energy efficient bulbs will cost more to buy, but Hughes says in the long run they will last longer and save you more money.

"You used to go and buy a 40 watt bulb or 60 watt and knew what light it had and how bright. The problem you're going to have now is you're going to have to learn about lumens, which is the amount of light put out by a bulb," said Hughes.

Hughes says the most efficient bulb to buy is Halogen. Stores will also start seeing a lot more of those including LED lights and compact fluorescent lights.

"The only bulbs not going to be affected is your appliances, bulbs for refrigerators and stove. They're going to stay the same. Still got to worry about chandelier bulbs or outside light bulb," said Hughes.

Flood lights will also stop being sold. Hughes says finding new bulbs that fit your needs may take some time and he'll try educating his customers on the change.

It may be time to stock up on these old bulbs before they are gone for good.

January 1st is the deadline to end production on incandescent bulbs. They will be available while supplies last in stores.
