King of Twist pays tribute to the King of Rock and Roll

(WMC-TV) – He's credited with the record-breaking song "The Twist" on Sunday Chubby Checker was in the Mid-South, paying respects to another music icon.

His song would sweep the nation. It was so hot, that the King of Rock and Roll himself got in on it.

Chubby Checker said, "Since then, we have the number one song in the world. "The Twist" is the number one song in the world."

In fact, "The Twist" is the only song to be number one spot on the Billboard chart twice once in 1960 then again in 1962.

"The King of Twist comes to see the King of Rock and Roll. The last time, we were alive talking to each other, but now he's not here," Checker told Action News 5.

A life on the road doing shows lends itself for moments where Checker can take in the surroundings.

On this trip, Memphis, Graceland and Elvis to be specific, were on his mind.

Checker said, "We were in a Las Vegas hotel and I spent about 45 minutes with him and about two months later my manager knocks and says, ‘Elvis is dead.' I said, ‘Awe no, I don't want to hear that.'"

Checker said he was devastated when he got the news.

"I remember I said to Elvis I says ‘how do you feel when all day long you're playing in the hotel and there's always a line of people to you?' He said to me he says, ‘I can't see that because I'm not there.'"

Checker's been on the road since he was in the 11th grade, but his encounter with the King of Rock and Roll is one he'll never forget.

He said, "Here I am at his house and I look around and say ‘Elvis you're still drawing a big crowd.'"
