HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Alcohol violation charges have been filed in connection to a Dec. 25 vehicle crash that has left a 19-year-old woman in critical condition.

Mathew Zitello, 19, was charged with felony driving under the influence after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree on Hilton Head Island.

His passenger, 19-year-old Vianery Garcia, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated from the vehicle. Because Garcia sustained life-threatening injuries, she was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Zitello told investigators that he had purchased a 25-ounce can of beer from the Pantry convenience store located at 1 Gumtree Rd. just before 10 p.m. the night of crash, according to the BCSO.

After reviewing the surveillance tape and interviews with witnesses, it was determined that Zitello was able to purchase the alcohol without producing identification to verify his age.

Both the clerk that sold Zitello the alcohol, 23-year-old Mitchell Dagan Young, and the store have since been cited with one count of sale of beer/wine to person under 21.

Young was located and arrested Monday and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing.

The store's citation is an administrative violation against its beer/wine permit, which will be reviewed by the Department of Revenue.

Zitello has also been charged with minor in possession of beer/wine.
