Car crashes into Ridgeland Senior Center injuring 4 people

RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -

Four people are out of the hospital on New Year's Eve after being injured by a car that plowed through the Ridgeland Senior Center Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, the driver, 84-year-old Bryan Perry, accidently hit the gas instead of the brake pedal.

About half of the back wall of the senior center is gone.

Workers say it probably won't reopen until Monday at the earliest.

"It was like something from a movie, and it scared me," said Kathy Hightower, Executive Director for the Jasper County Council on Aging.

She says she was standing a few feet away when Perry's blue Toyota smashed through the back of the Ridgeland Senior Center.

"I kind of looked up and saw the car coming. It just didn't stop, and people just went flying everywhere," she said.

Perry crashed through the back wall shortly before 10:30 a.m. as members were enjoying their breakfast and coffee.

"When I looked up, he done knock that door down. I mean it happened so fast, it hit that table," said senior citizen Jimmie Cleland.

Freddie Cunningham was sitting at a table nearby.

"The table just knocked me down a little bit and I moved and I get up to help the other guy at the table next to me," said Cunningham.

"We had this one lady that pulled her friend out from under the car," added Hightower.

The four people that were hurt were treated at Candler Hospital and later released.

Employees wasted no time in cleaning up the damage.

Now that everyone is ok, the center's main concern is making sure it can reopen to serve the community.

"Most of them, this is the only place they have to go, so many of them don't have family or anything," said Hightower.

Charges are still pending in this case.

The Ridgeland Senior Center is closed until at least Jan. 6, but the administrative offices and the center's "Meals on Wheels" program will be available on Thursday and Friday.
