AFP spending $1.4M in NC on new anti-Hagan ad

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – The conservative group Americans for Prosperity has launched its first ad of 2014 against incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina, once again tying Hagan with the controversial Affordable Care Act.

The ad features a woman named Sheila Salter of Chapel Hill, talking about having her health insurance policy canceled because of the Affordable Care Act.  "Kay Hagan told us, if you like your insurance plan and your doctors, you can keep them," Salter says to the camera. Salter goes on to say she now has a temporary policy that costs her 20% more, and that her coverage will increase another $4,500 under Obamacare in 2015.

"More than 470,000 North Carolinians had to have their insurance plans reinstated, only to pay more for the same plan, due to this disastrous law," Donald Bryson, AFP-North Carolina's policy specialist said in an email news release announcing the ad. "People literally have to pay more for the same plan, and it's all because of Senator Hagan's vote. Senator Hagan still says she would ‘vote for it again,' despite the disastrous effects of this law. That is why we are educating North Carolinians on the issue and holding the Senator accountable."

Hagan's campaign released a comment on the new ad. "A new year and a new smear from a Koch-brothers backed group that has no accountability to North Carolinians, takes secret, undisclosed cash and has a record of airing ads that fact checkers call ‘false,'" Sadie Weiner, Hagan Campaign Communications Director said in an email. "Outside interests like the Koch Brothers are spending millions to buy a Senate seat because they know Kay will never carry the water for their special interest agenda like her opponents have shown they are all too eager to do. Kay supports a commonsense fix to allow people to keep their plans, but all of her opponents and their special interest backers want to go back to a time when insurance companies can charge women more for coverage, drop you from your plan when you get sick and deny you care altogether because of a pre-existing condition."

The ad is the third in a series of political ads aired by AFP. Bryson says the ad will run for three weeks statewide, at a cost of about $1.4 million. That will bring the campaign total to about $4.2 million since it began in October of 2013. Bryson says the group is spending $100,000 to air the ad in the Wilmington television market.
