Winter weather strands travelers

Posted: Updated:

As the holidays come to an end, some travelers are having a hard time getting home after winter weather moves through the Northeast.

Travelers at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport saw flight delays and cancellations. The flights out of Savannah are not the problem; for most people it is the connector flights that are disrupting travel plans.

WTOC found some travelers at the Greyhound Bus Station who decided to drive through the wintery mess.

"This is only the guaranteed way to get home without being stuck in an airport for two or three days," said traveler Shawn Wiley.

Wiley says he flew his way down to Orlando but decided to catch the Greyhound back to Pittsburgh to avoid being stranded in an airport, but now he's worried that he still may get stuck somewhere.

"Whenever I get above Virginia, then we will really be able to gauge how icy the rain may get," said Wiley.

Greyhound has already canceled a number of trips in Boston and New York, but when these passengers boarded the bus earlier today, their trip was still on schedule.

Back at the airport, passengers were not having much luck. The plane Carole Levin was trying to catch was coming in from a very snowy, messy Chicago.

"They had to turn the plane around and de-ice it twice because as it was waiting on the tarmac," said Levin.

Most folks were in the Savannah area for the holidays and said they were hoping to at least make it home before they have to return to work on Monday.

"On the way to the airport, I was saying to my aunt, at least I can look at green before I leave and go back to six degrees in temperature and snow," said Ann Pufpaff.
