JEFF DAVIS CO., GA (WTOC) -

Jeff Davis County's sheriff vowed to fight drugs when he took office a year ago this week.

Sheriff Preston Bohannon took his oath of office in Hazlehurst last year. He won the office after eight people ran for the open seat. He told WTOC then that working with the public and fighting drugs would be two of his goals.

Bohannon weighs on the progress so far. He said the success they've had so far in getting drugs off the streets is as much from the public as it has been his personnel.

Evidence pictures became much more common for the sheriff's office this year. In 2012, the county arrested 77 people on drug charges. In 2013, that number jumped to 190.

"Compare the past to the present, we're an A plus for Jeff Davis County. It's been a very successful year in fighting the drugs in the county from all walks of life. We haven't thrown our scope onto one culture or gender. It's just drugs, period," Bohannon said.

In addition to finding and seizing drugs, they've confiscated cash, guns as well as a dozen cars to take the resources away from accused dealers. With one previous sheriff limited by health issues and another forced from office by federal charges, he said the office is able to focus on drugs  - with info from the public.

"The people in the county, after 2013, realize they can trust us now if they call us, they know we're not going to put them in a bad situation. We're not going to put their well being or their family's well being at jeopardy," he said.

The previous sheriff left office with health issues and the one before that left under federal indictment.

The sheriff also noted his office's cooperation with federal drug agents.

Four of their cases will go through U.S. District Court, which he says means tougher sentences for those suspects if convicted.
