Woman continues to demolish house after it collapses on her

Posted: Updated:

An elderly woman continues to physically tear down her house after it collapsed on her in August, sending her to the hospital.

Neighbors in the Savannah neighborhood said the house had been condemned but the elderly woman who owned it did not want to pay to tear it down. She decided to do it herself and the house fell right on top of her.

Just a few days ago, a neighbor captured a video of the woman who recovered from her injuries and is back out there trying to tear it down piece by piece. Neighbors say she collects the scraps with a rake, puts them in a bucket and then takes them off to be burned.

"It's obvious that it's dangerous and she could hurt herself," said a neighbor.

The City of Savannah says the woman had difficulty maintaining the property so she decided to tear it down.

"We haven't seen any professionals out here attempting to move it," said a neighbor.

Neighbors say she didn't want to pay thousands of dollars to have it done professionally so she literally took it upon herself.

According to the city, she has a demolition permit and has met all the standards required by law but neighbors are still concerned.

"She's not only putting herself at risk, she's probably putting other people at risk by doing this on her own," said a neighbor.  "The concern is, she's an elderly lady and she's out here attempting to do this on her own and she's going to kill herself if she doesn't stop."

Neighbors say this wasn't where she lived. She inherited the property and just couldn't take care of it.
