Guest House Management: guests were not forced to repay rent

Posted: Updated:

Management at the Guest House may not be evicting guests, but the former live-in manager, Janice Talley, is leaving.

Hours after bailing out of jail, she was escorted by police as she cleaned out her apartment.

Talley is accused of stealing $2,000 from the hotel and stealing guest's rent money, which is why the new manager, Curtis Knowles, and the property owner, Robert Anderson, gave every guest one rent free week.

"We gave them a free week, and said we would start with a clean slate," Knowles said. "You can check out or you can stay. But if you stay, you pay."

Knowles said some guests accepted that offer.

Donna Doe didn't. She checked out Friday morning.

Doe claims she paid $450 cash to Talley last Friday to cover two weeks. Doe said, some of the $2,000 that Talley allegedly stole was her rent money, so she shouldn't have to pay rent again, until next week.

"They had no receipts," said Knowles.

Knowles said it's Doe's fault for not getting a receipt when she paid Talley.

He also pointed out the sign sitting on the front desk, which states : "You should be given a receipt for payments. Please ask for a receipt if you are not given one or advise management."

"I asked for a receipt, and her statement to me was, ‘The printer is broken,'" Doe said.

"If I'm going to give out money, I'm going to get some kind of receipt," said Knowles.  "I don't know about that printer thing, because I would personally ask for some kind of hand written receipt."

Doe is the only guest who left Friday.

Anderson said this is the second time he's had Talley arrested for allegedly stealing from him. The first time was back in 2009 when she was working at the Guest House on White Bluff Road.

Those charges against Talley were dropped, and he re-hired her.

Metro Police are investigating these latest claims.

They said Talley could be facing more charges once their investigation is complete.
