BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region on average responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours.

The Red Cross is always in need of disaster-trained volunteers who respond to the needs of those individuals devastated by disasters. That is why they are offering a new volunteer and disaster overview class.

The class will take place Jan. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at City Hall, at 1911 Boundary Street in Beaufort. The class is also offered in Bluffton on Jan. 9 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Palmetto Service Center, at 59 Sheridan Park Circle. It is free and open to the public.

In 2013 the Palmetto SC Region responded to the needs of more than 1,400 families and 4,400 individuals affected by disaster. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross Chapters that span 35-counties of South Carolina.
