(WMC-TV) - Concerns have shifted from the potential for a snow event to a hard freeze warning across the tri-state area.

Public works planners expect puddles from the rain earlier Sunday to freeze over causing patches of ice, hence hazardous conditions for drivers.

Overpasses and bridges are the main concerns. They freeze over faster because they are elevated and there's a cross-breeze.

In the metro Memphis area, Public Works Director Dwan Gilliom is planning to put all 14 sand and salt trucks out overnight because that is when the hard freeze is expected.

Gilliom warns drivers to be particularly cautious on Highway 385 where treacherous conditions are prevalent during such weather events.

"Obviously, our biggest concern at this particular point is the moisture and surface, which is going to freeze later this evening," said Gilliom. "Right now, the surface temperature is hovering just above freezing while the air temperature has dropped below freezing," he added.
