BJWSA: Water may have earthy smell, taste

Posted: Updated:

Some Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority customers may have noticed an earthy taste and odor in their tap water for several weeks.

The tap water's appearance and taste are due to operational issues at the Chelsea Water Treatment Plant, according to BJWSA. Treatment and maintenance procedures have been changed to fix the problem.

There's still a slight odor in the water leaving the plant, and customers may notice the odor for two more weeks. The water is safe to drink and use as normal, according to the BJWSA.

"We apologize for this taste and odor event. BJWSA strives to provide the highest possible quality water to all of its customers, and we know that right now we have to do better. We have identified improvements we can make in our treatment process, and we are working as fast as we can to implement them. The water leaving the plant is improving every day and should be back to normal soon," said Ed Saxon, BJWSA's General Manager in a statement. "We appreciate the patience of our customers."
