The Rotary Club of Savannah kicked off its centennial year celebration Monday.
Downtown Rotarians gathered in the median at Liberty and Bull to unveil an historic marker commemoration the club's 100 years.
The first meeting of the organization was at the old Desoto Hotel so it is one of the few organizations to have spent a century at the same place while undertaking myriad projects to make Savannah better.
"We've done so much in our community, including raising bond money for the first Tybee Road," said Savannah Rotary President Mike Traynor. "We've lighted the squares, we've helped with eradicating polio around the world, just had a tremendous impact. Happy birthday Rotary!"
The Rotarians will be celebrating all year long and in December they will unveil their gift to the city; a new playground in Forsyth Park that will meet the needs of all children in the area.
