SCMPD prepares for cold weather

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are monitoring the streets as the cold weather moves in; their biggest concern is people who are stranded out in the extreme temperatures.

Metro Police will be patrolling the roads, looking for any icy power lines and roadways. If you encounter black ice, do not hit the brakes, just ease off the accelerator and try to maintain control of your car.

Metro Police also wants to remind drivers not to leave your car running while unattended. Police say every year when the weather gets this cold, there are reports of cars that are stolen right out of people's driveways.

"This cold snap is more than likely going to force a lot of people to warm up their cars, go back inside to stay warm and then get distracted by grabbing cups of coffee or picking up their last bit of items," said Cpl. John Simmons.

Cpl. Simmons says plan ahead and take the extra time to bundle up and sit in your car as it warms up.
