Baptist Center offers rides to shelters

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah Baptist Center is working to help people who have no protection from the freezing temperatures by collecting supplies and offering rides to homeless shelters.

Stephanie Carr, director of the center, said when they visited the homeless camps Monday, no one would accept a ride to the shelter; they're going to stick it out in their tents.

However, more than fifty people came by the center Monday needing clothing and food.

It's been all hands on deck since the Baptist Center realized the temperatures were going to plummet. They have been collecting blankets, socks, gloves, sleeping bags, even tissues and Carr says this is the first time they've gone around offering rides to local shelters.

"So many of our clients do live in tents and, we also have guests who come from the shelters, but the biggest thing, in a tent with this kind of wind and these kind of temperatures, it's extreme," said Carr.

Carr says they will be going back out to the homeless camps Tuesday morning to once again offer rides to the shelters.
