First Alert Weather: record-breaking cold likely Wednesday AM ahead of big late-week warm-up

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - An arctic mass will remain in-place Tuesday night. Warmer air will build between Wednesday and the weekend and moisture for showers will also return.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Continue to mind cold-sensitive people and pets as temperatures will plummet to the teens under clear skies. Mercifully, winds will be very light.

RECORD LOW LIKELY: With a low in the 10s, Wilmington's January 8th record of 20 degrees will likely be broken. Average lows are in the mid 30s.

WEDNESDAY: Sunshine should give temperatures a nice boost to the low and mid 40s for the afternoon. Also expect light northeast breezes.

EXTENDED FORECAST: Daily highs will grow to the 50s Thursday and 60s to possibly even 70s for Friday and the weekend. Daily rain chances will grow to 30 to 40% levels in this span.
