Deputies said an Upstate mom left her three young children alone along a Spartanburg County road in 10-degree temperatures and when she was arrested, she kicked out a deputy's patrol car window.
Spartanburg County deputies said they received a call that the woman was seen walking with her three young children not dressed for the weather along New Cut Road near Euclid Road about 6:30 a.m.
A woman driving by stopped to offer them a ride, but the mom ran off, so that's when the passerby called deputies, according to the incident report.
The woman said she followed after the mom and children and heard one of the kids cry out "my shoe gone, my shoe gone, mama," according to the report.
Deputies said one of the children ran up to the stranger, crying, and was wearing a sleveless dress with an unzipped jacket.
The woman told deputies the little girl was freezing and tried to let the woman know she had her child, but the mom started chanting something and ran away, never looking back. Deputies identified the mom as Raqheal Sterling, 27, and said her children were ages 4, 3, and 5-months old.
Deputies said they found Sterling running toward the Li'l Cricket and were able to stop her and take her into custody. When she was placed in the back of a patrol car, deputies said Sterling would not answer their questions about how many kids she had but looked straight ahead with big eyes and breathed hard.
While deputies checked on the kids, they said Sterling kicked out the back right window, busting the glass, then climbed out the window.
As deputies went to handcuff her, Sterling tried to flee but they took her down and placed her in another car, according to the report.
Sterling was arrested and charged with three counts of unlawful neglect of a child and malicious injury to property.
The children were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center as a precaution, deputies said. They said the kids were found in good health and placed in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
