Pipe cracks below Harmon Street

Crews are working to repair a major hole in the road caused by a cracked pipe below the surface. The cement caved in late Monday night after a car drove over it.

It's unclear what exactly caused the pipe to crack, but crews have Harmon Street from Wolf Street down to Gwinett Street blocked off while they make the repairs.

City officials say an old 8-inch terracotta pipe cracked, causing the pavement to collapse when a car drove over it late Monday night.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded. One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The city said the pipe was not functioning, but the repairs may be a little more complicated because there is a gas line nearby. The gas line was not damaged.

"We're digging down digging around the pipe trying to figure out where the pipe leads to  what kind of pipe it is and, then well, take action," said city spokesman Bret Bell.

The street should be back open in a few hours, but the crew will leave the barricades around the damaged portion of the road until the repairs are finished in Savannah.

The city said it could take about a week to fully repair the road. They are just taking extra precaution because of its proximity to the damaged pipe.
