Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Wilmington Island woman charged with fatally shooting husband won't serve jail time under a plea deal.

Melaya Sams is charged with shooting of her husband 36-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Michael Sams shortly after he returned home from Iraq in 2010.

Melaya Sams will serve no jail time under a plea agreement with the prosecution.

Instead, she is now sentenced to 15 years probation after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband. It's called Alford Plea, which means that she maintains her innocence despite having to enter a guilty plea.

As part of the deal, Melaya Sams is ineligible for any benefits from her husband.
