LOS ANGELES (CNN) - A former pastor has an unusual new year's resolution: He's giving up God.
Ryan Bell, 42, says for the next 12 months he will live as an atheist. He won't pray, go to church or read the Bible.
"I'm on this - in this space where I'm not a pastor anymore and was given some freedom and space to think about questions that I've had for a long time about the Bible and religion and faith," Bell said. "And I just decided to spend a year really exploring the other side of the coin."
Bell's idea for the experiment was sparked last March, when he was asked to resign as pastor of a Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hollywood.
Bell said his liberal views, including support for gays and lesbians, clashed with the church.
The decision to become an atheist has already cost bell two jobs teaching at Christian schools.
An atheist blogger has set up an online fundraiser for Bell. In just one day, nearly 900 people donated more than $19,000 to help Bell.
