STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - Georgia Southern University has announced its new head football coach at a news conference Friday in the Bishop Field House at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
Willie Fritz was named the head coach of the Eagles football team. He replaces Jeff Monken who left after four years to go to Army.
"Our new coach will embrace our expectations and traditions," said Georgia Southern's President Brooks Keel at the news conference.
Fritz comes to Statesboro from Sam Houston State University. Sam Houston State is also in the FCS, which is the division that Georgia Southern is leaving for the FBS. Read Fritz's bio from the Bearkats website.
The Bearkats won back-to-back Southland Conference titles in 2011 and 2012 and went to the FCS championship game both of those years. The team lost both times.
Fritz said he'll meet with GSU players on Sunday.
