TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Tybee Island held its first ever Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Saturday.

The new parade was put on "Tybee MLK" and despite the gloomy weather, a bunch of folks turned up to celebrate and take part in the festivities. Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson served as the Grand Marshall of the parade as it travelled down Butler Avenue.

"What you can do in the community is look after one another, do what Dr. King would want us to do. Meaning, to the old, to the young, to the lonely, to the grieving, to those that are afraid, reach out to your to your neighbors and, no matter what color you are, what political persuasion you are, or what sexuality you are, or what mobility you have, reach out one to another because we're all here together trying to take care of one another", said Julia Pearce, a coordinator of the parade and a member of "Tybee MLK".

Organizers plan to hold the parade one week before Savannah's celebration in the coming years.
