GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville city officials want to hear the public's input on a proposal to ban cell phone and tablet use while driving in city limits Monday.

City officials said that after several months of research and discussion, a committee proposed a ban on the use of cell phones and other hand-held devices for talking, messaging, e-mailing, web browsing and other distracting activities.

Officials said the ban would permit devices to be used if drivers could operate them "hands free," such as GPS devices and apps.

The ban includes penalties that stiffen based on the number of offenses. Officials said a first offense would carry a maximum penalty of $100. The second offense could be penalized for up to $200, and a third offense would carry up to a $300 fine and the court may choose to seize the offender's device, according to a media release.

City Council members said they want to hear from anyone who lives, works or attends school in the city, and those who frequent the city for shopping, dining, recreation and entertainment before council continues considering the ban.

At a public hearing scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall on Main Street, people will be invited to weigh in.

City Council will review and assess the feedback before making any officials decision to send the ordinance to council.

Officials said if council takes up the proposed ordinance, the public will have two future opportunities to offer opinion during the first and second Readings, before a final vote is taken.
