SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah man is in custody of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office on federal charges in connection with a 2012 bank robbery.

The Savannah Bank at 4809 Waters Ave. was robbed on May 8, 2012. Two masked men went into the bank at about 11:14 a.m., ordered everyone on the floor. One of the suspects put employees on the floor as he pointed a handgun on them, according to the FBI-Atlanta Field Office. They left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

On Thursday, Derick Lashawn Hayes, 28, was charged with robbing the bank. He will be detained on the federal charges and will appear in front of a U.S. Magistrate Judge for an initial appearance, according to the FBI.

"The federal charges brought in this matter are a direct result of the FBI's recently established Safe Streets Violent Crimes Task force based in Savannah and the close cooperation and assistance provided by the Savannah Chatham Metro Police Dept.," said Ricky Maxwell, Acting Special Agent in Charge, FBI Atlanta, in a statement.
