Pressure on to get baseball stadium built

Now that Biloxi has a minor league baseball team, the focus is on building a stadium. It's time to get busy transforming the site across from Beau Rivage into a $35 million baseball stadium for Biloxi's AA ball club.

With the start of the 2015 season 15 months away, the clock is ticking.

"It's very urgent. We've been moving quickly and we're going to have to move even quicker now," said Project Manager Leigh Jaunsen.

Dale Partners is the firm in charge of the project. Biloxi has yet to secure the $21 million needed to build the stadium. City officials must hammer out some lease agreements and contractual issues with the Southern League, then work on putting the financing together.

"We'll come back and finalize the issues related to the contract and get the city council, the team and Beau Rivage in agreement. Once that's done, we'll sell the bonds. It will take us, once all that's done, about 30 days to have money in hand to start paying vendors," according to Biloxi CAO David Nichols.

The major point to negotiate in the agreement with the league involves a financial hit if the team is not ready to play ball by opening day next year.

"There is a penalty clause in the contract. $10,000 per home game missed. We want to revisit that," said Nichols.

Once ground is broken, the construction team knows they will run into surprises and hopes the weather cooperates, especially during hurricane season.

"There will be challenges. That's what you deal with in construction. We should be okay," said Jaunsen.
