A Chesterfield athlete's mother is outraged after crooks steal her son's customized wheelchair.
It was stolen from a shed in the back of a home off Rainwater Road.
"I was sick to my stomach," said the concerned mother who was afraid to share her name or show her face on camera.
The mother says her son is devastated after crooks got into the family shed and rolled off with the specially made chair that prevented him from tipping over on the court.
"I just can't imagine why anybody would do this," said the mother. "I feel like he is disadvantaged enough, and to put this on top of it is just heartbreaking."
Between the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 4, and the morning of Thursday, Dec. 5, someone broke into a shed behind a home on Rainwater Road in the Huntingcreek Hills subdivision. The item stolen was a blue, Top End brand basketball wheelchair. The chair was used for racing and basketball, but stored in the shed during off seasons.
Police say the wheelchair theft is unique.
"This has got to be one of the first in my career that I have seen," said Corporal Kevin Bacon. "A very sad case. The police department is looking for anyone who can give us any information. Even if it is someone who perhaps saw someone bring a wheelchair to a scrap yard. We are looking for any clues whatsoever."
The family says they just want the wheelchair back.
"It has devastated him," said the mom. "It has devastated me. It has devastated my entire family."
Police say this all happened between December 4th and December 5th. If you have any information contact Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
