5 wrecks cause traffic nightmare on I-516

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Rescue crews kept busy Tuesday morning after five separate wrecks during Tuesday morning's commute caused a traffic nightmare on Interstate 516 and Interstate 16 in Savannah.

A red pickup truck lost control and ran off the side of I-516 east after getting off I-16 eastbound headed toward DeRenne Avenue early Tuesday morning. The truck ended up upside-down in the woods. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Tow crews arrived and were not able to lift the truck up out of the wood line, so officials brought a large crane to help lift the truck upright and remove it.

Two of the outside lanes of I-516 eastbound had to be shut down for a couple of hours, but the truck was removed and all lanes reopened at about 8 a.m.

Police say a second crash occurred shortly after on I-516 eastbound and Tremont Road, affecting traffic on I-516 eastbound. It was a two-vehicle, fender-bender with no injuries involved and the crash was cleared quickly.

While crews were assisting the I-516 and Tremont crash, a bad five-vehicle wreck happened on I-516 eastbound, right under the I-16 overpass. Officials say one woman and a child had to be helped out of their vehicle. There were only minor injuries.

"While we were trying to get that crash cleared, in the process, we had a chain reaction crash about a half a mile back that involved five cars," said a representative SCMPD.

Then, two more two-car, fender-benders happened at about 8:25 a.m. on I-516 westbound, right under the I-16 overpass and directly across from the five-vehicle crash.

"As a team we are working well together and keeping traffic moving along pretty well," said the SCMPD representative.

All five wrecks happened in close proximity of each other and officials believe that the wet road conditions and rubber-necking most likely played a factor.

"It's very bad, you can't stop a car on a wet road like you can on a dry road," said Johnnie Kicklighter, the father of one of the people in the crash.

Traffic is now flowing on I-16 and on I-516, and only minor delays can be expected, if at all.
