Grand opening ceremony held for new Liberty Wing

The doors are open and Fort Stewart soldiers and their families are utilizing Winn Army Community Hospital's brand new wing.

Community and Army leaders gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the completion of the Liberty Wing.

The 65,000 square foot first floor houses physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthopedics and podiatry, in almost three times the space than it used to have.

On the second floor is behavior medicine and social work services. Active duty soldiers are the priority patients, but in most cases if space allows, family and retired enrolled beneficiaries are welcome as well.

The new wing not only provides more space, but it centralizes these sevices for improved experience and efficiency.

"Just having the ability to expand and work with patients like the're supposed to and to take in more patients even at the same time," said Col. Kirk Eggleston, MEDDAC Commander at Fort Stewart. "They were just limited to how many could fit in the area and this really is allowing them to expand their services in not only what they can do but in the number of patients they can take care of."

This is the first major expansion for this hospital since it opened back in 1983.

The Liberty Wing is phase one of a two phase project. It cost about $24 million. The second phase, which includes a new ER, an expanded pharmacy and more parking, is expect to be finished by 2016.
