Two firefighters with the Springfield Fire Dept. were honored Tuesday night by Effingham Emergency Management for their actions during a tanker explosion on Hwy. 17 in November.
David Grenoble and Fire Chief Travis Zittrouer were recognized for their bravery. Both men said this award wasn't just for them.
"It means a tremendous deal," said Grenoble. "It's and honor that I was selected to receive an award. There was many people operating that incident that day that went above and beyond. It's an honor to be recognized as one that did so."
"There were a lot of guys out there that day that deserve recognition also, especially those that were up in front lines with me actually hands-on fighting the fire," said Zittrouer. "It was a rough afternoon and we all came together to get the job done."
Three people died when a pickup truck and a tanker truck collided, causing the explosion.
