WLOX Editorial: Don't cut school year length

Posted: Updated:

State law requires 180 days of classes for schools in Mississippi. But now, there is a move a foot in the state legislature to reduce the number of class days to 175. Why? Because of scheduling, so the school year will end before the end of May.

We disagree with cutting class days. State legislators should be looking for ways to improve education in Mississippi, not for ways for more vacation days for teachers and students.

Let's face it, Mississippi is most often near the bottom of the list of states when it comes to levels of attainment in education. Many of our educators are working hard to raise the level of achievement for our young people. Every minute in the classroom counts.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
