FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
"It's a beautiful day here at the University of North Alabama." He began every class that way, rain or shine.
Dr. Larry Nelson lost his battle with an aggressive brain cancer on Jan. 14. He battled glioblastoma for nine months. Doctors discovered the tumor following a minor traffic accident on April 29, 2013.
Students, alumni, family, friends, and friends of friends followed Dr. Nelson's battle on the Facebook page, Prayers for Dr. Larry Nelson. Dr. Nelson's daughter, Julia, updated the page frequently. She shared the struggles and frustrations, along with the uplifting moments during her father's journey. The page grew to 6,725 followers.
Dr. Nelson began teaching history at UNA in 1985. But, his impact stretches far beyond the classroom. He lead Bible studies, attended most school functions, and counseled any student in need of guidance.
Dr. Nelson taught United States History, United States Constitutional History, Recent United States History, History of the South, and History of Religion.
After learning of his passing, students took to the Facebook page to share memories and tell his family how he changed their lives. One post reads "What a wonderful God fearing man. He was the type of professor who taught in and out of the classroom. He led by example and touched so many lives."
Dr. Larry Nelson leaves behind his wife Verlie Nelson, son Pete Nelson, daughter Julia Nelson Strickland, and three grandchildren.
Visitation for Dr. Nelson is Friday, Jan. 17 from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Faith Church in Florence. Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. also at Faith Church.
