Former D.C. mayor speaks at SSU

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The former mayor of Washington, D.C. is advising a new generation in Savannah.

Anthony Williams, the current CEO of the Federal City Council in Washington D.C. and former mayor visited Savannah State University on Wednesday.

He spoke to students about their roles as public servants in making Savannah a great region for business development.

"I think today's youth see the dysfunction for, for example, in my city, in Washington, D.C.," said Williams. "Certainly at a national level, that certainly has to have an effect on them and I think that's resonating with them and they are all spirited, accomplished kids that are looking to make an impact on the world."

Williams served as the fifth mayor of Washington, D.C. from 1999-2007.

During his two terms, he was credited with leading the District's financial comeback, improving government agency performance, lowering taxes and investing in infrastructure and human services.
