Investigators say food left cooking on the stove appears to be the cause behind a Birmingham apartment fire.
The fire happened Wednesday night at a complex on 1st Street West near 11th Court West in the East Thomas area.
Battalion Chief Ty Gober says the fire started in one apartment. The flames got into the attic and ran all the way down through several other apartments.
Shelia Arlene says she is thankful that she and her mother were not at home when the fire started.
"There were oxygen tanks and there could have been big explosion. Thank God everyone's okay," said Arlene.
A total of 7 apartments were damaged. The Red Cross is assisting affected families.
